Calvary’s History – update

Calvary Community Church first began conducting services on September 23, 1962. The small congregation met at 1689 Laurel, Hanover Park, Illinois in the home of the Kowalski’s. Reverend Eugene West was the first Pastor of this congregation.

Church growth encouraged these families to move to a new location—Ontarioville School. Pastor West urged the congregation to complete its constitution and statement of faith, and move toward becoming a legally incorporated was body.

That dream became a reality in September of 1964. The church became affiliated with a larger body of Christians in the Baptist denomination since they were in doctrinal accord. Thus, Calvary Baptist Church of Schaumburg Township born.

Through the early years the church had purchased a few properties. The location which seemed to be most centrally located was the Springinsguth property. In July of 1968 the foundation was laid for the building of an excited growing church body. 1000 S. Springinsguth in Schaumburg was dedicated as the new home of Calvary Baptist Church on March 16, 1969.

In January of 1971, Reverend Mahlon L. Hillard was called to be the second Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. Reverend Hillard brought the church through many growth stages. In 1975 the building was expanded to include the education wing of the church and the gymnasium.

In 1982 David Maurer was called as Calvary’s third Pastor. This excited congregation had gone through many changes since that first meeting in the home of the Kowalski’s. God’s moving Spirit could still be felt.

May 1, 1988, Calvary’s fourth Senior Pastor, David J. Skelton, was called from St. Paul’s Community Church in Mineral City, Ohio to serve the body at Calvary Baptist Church as their pastor/teacher till 2002. Under the leadership of Pastor Skelton, the name of the church was changed to Calvary Community Church, a new worship center was built, and the church became governed by elders.

On June 13, 2004, Calvary’s fifth, Senior Pastor, Scott Eaton, was called from Braggtown Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina to serve the congregation as their senior pastor. During Pastor Scott’s tenure the church paid off $1.2 million dollars in debt, replaced the entire roof of the church and renovated the foyer, kitchen, nursery, hallways and classrooms. The church began Crossroads Kids Club to minister to kids at local elementary school, missions giving was expanded and a greater emphasis of prayer begun. On September 9, 2024 Pastor Scott shared with the Elder board that after 20 years of faithfully preaching and shepherding Calvary Community Church, his time as Senior Pastor was drawing to a close and submitted his resignation effective December 31, 2024.

The year 2025 began as a period of transition for Calvary Community Church. During this time the church body was served by Pastor David Riemenschneider. Pastor David faithfully preached the Word of God. And with his wife, Marina, they loved and served the body in many areas. During their tenure at Calvary they had a very positive impact on the lives and hearts of many of the congregants.

On January 4th, 2026, Pastor Teyvone Mitchell was overwhelmingly affirmed as Calvary’s sixth Senior Pastor and will officially begin his ministry at Calvary on February 1, 2026. Pastor Tey is looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead to advance and build God’s Kingdom in Schaumburg.
